Baal Shem Tov · 1698 – 1760

1. Okopy 1698 – 1720
Israel ben Eliezer is born in a small town in Podolia. By tradition he is orphaned young and raised by the community.
2. Tluste 1721 – 1739
He works as a teacher's helper and at other humble jobs and retreats to the Carpathian mountains. In his thirties he makes himself known as a healer and teacher.
3. Medzhybizh 1740 – 1760
He settles here and disciples gather from far away. He teaches that God can be served with joy by the simplest Jew. From here Hasidism spreads across Eastern Europe.
