On 26 March 1979 Prime Minister Menachem Begin and President Anwar Sadat signed the peace treaty on the White House lawn, with President Jimmy Carter as witness, sixteen months after Sadat's visit to Jerusalem. Israel agreed to withdraw in stages from the entire Sinai Peninsula, captured in 1967, including its airbases and settlements; Egypt agreed to full diplomatic relations, open borders and free passage for Israeli ships through the Suez Canal and the Straits of Tiran. Sinai was largely demilitarized, under the watch of the Multinational Force and Observers.
The withdrawal was completed on 25 April 1982 with the painful evacuation of the town of Yamit, and the last dispute, over Taba, was settled by international arbitration in 1988. Egypt was suspended from the Arab League for a decade and Sadat was assassinated in 1981, yet the "cold peace" has held for more than four decades, removing the largest Arab army from the circle of war against Israel.
