On April 11, 1961, Israel began the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem, following his capture by Mossad agents in Argentina in 1960. Eichmann, a senior Nazi official, had played a central role in organizing the deportation of millions of European Jews during the Holocaust.
The trial featured testimony from Holocaust survivors and extensive Nazi documentation, exposing the atrocities of the Holocaust to an international audience.
Eichmann was convicted of crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Sentenced to death in December 1961, he was executed in 1962. The trial profoundly influenced Holocaust remembrance and Israeli national consciousness.
