The Irgun Tzvai Leumi splits from the Haganah in 1931 on the argument that restraint invites further attack and that only retaliation deters it, and it aligns with Jabotinsky's Revisionist movement. It carries out reprisal attacks during the Arab Revolt, then suspends operations to support Britain against Germany, resuming in 1944 under Menachem Begin with a declared revolt against British rule. Its operations include the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1946, the Acre prison break, and the attack on Deir Yassin — actions that make it internationally notorious and bitterly divisive within the Yishuv, where the Haganah at one point actively turned its members over to the British. It is absorbed into the IDF in 1948 after the Altalena confrontation, and its political heirs become Herut and ultimately Likud.
