On April 1, 1925, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem officially opened on Mount Scopus during the British Mandate. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Chaim Weizmann, Lord Balfour, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, and Jewish intellectuals.
Conceived by the Zionist movement as a center for Jewish scholarship, science, and higher education, the university represented a major achievement in rebuilding Jewish national and cultural life in the Land of Israel.
Its establishment strengthened Jerusalem's position as an intellectual center and promoted Hebrew as a modern language of academic research, contributing to the cultural and institutional foundations of the future State of Israel.
