Elah son of Baasha reigned about two years in Tirzah (1 Kings 16:8–14). While his army was once again besieging the Philistine town of Gibbethon, he was drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, his palace steward, when Zimri, commander of half his chariots, struck him down, in the 27th year of Asa of Judah. Zimri then killed every male of Baasha's family, along with his kinsmen and friends.

The Bible presents the massacre as the fulfillment of Jehu son of Hanani's prophecy against Baasha. It was the second time in about 25 years that a northern dynasty ended by assassination in its second generation, after Jeroboam's son Nadab, and the pattern of coups that began here marked the Kingdom of Israel until its fall, in contrast to Judah's single Davidic dynasty.
