Jehu son of Hanani was a prophet whose career, according to the Bible, spanned decades and both kingdoms. His father, Hanani the seer, had been jailed by King Asa of Judah for condemning his alliance with Aram (2 Chronicles 16:7–10). Jehu delivered God's sentence on Baasha of Israel: he had been raised "from the dust" to rule, yet had followed Jeroboam's sins, so his dynasty would be swept away and its dead left to dogs and birds (1 Kings 16:1–7). Some thirty years later he met Jehoshaphat of Judah returning from the disastrous battle of Ramoth-gilead, fought alongside Ahab, and rebuked him: "Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord?", while crediting him for removing the Asherah poles (2 Chronicles 19:2–3).
He is also one of the prophet-historians the Chronicler cites as a source: the acts of Jehoshaphat were "written in the words of Jehu son of Hanani," which were included in the Book of the Kings of Israel (2 Chronicles 20:34). He should not be confused with King Jehu son of Nimshi, who later overthrew Ahab's house.
