Merodach-Baladan II was a Chaldean chief who twice seized the throne of Babylon in defiance of Assyria, first from −722 to −710 and again briefly in −703, and who looked for allies across the region against the Assyrian kings Sargon II and Sennacherib.

The Bible remembers him as the king who sent envoys with letters and a gift to Hezekiah after Hezekiah recovered from his illness. Hezekiah proudly showed them all his treasures, and the prophet Isaiah warned that one day everything in his palace would be carried off to Babylon (2 Kings 20; Isaiah 39).
