Isaac "Bougie" Herzog, born in Tel Aviv in 1960, is the son of President Chaim Herzog and grandson of Chief Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog. A lawyer, he led the Labour Party and the opposition, heading the Zionist Union list in 2015, and then chaired the Jewish Agency from 2018 to 2021. On 2 June 2021 the Knesset elected him the eleventh president by 87 votes to 26 over Miriam Peretz, and he took office on 7 July 2021, the first son of a president to hold the office.

During the deep divisions over the government's judicial overhaul in 2023 he mediated between the sides and in March presented a compromise, the "People's Framework". In July 2023 he addressed a joint meeting of the United States Congress for Israel's 75th anniversary. After the Hamas massacre of 7 October 2023 and the war that followed, he became a leading voice for the hostages and their families and for Israel abroad. His single seven-year term is due to end in 2028.
