After the Six-Day War, Egypt set out to wear Israel down along the Suez Canal with artillery barrages, commando raids and air battles, from 1967 until a ceasefire in August 1970. Israel built the Bar-Lev Line of fortifications along the canal and answered with commando operations and deep air raids, while Soviet advisers, pilots and missiles poured into Egypt.

About 1,400 Israeli soldiers were killed on all fronts, including in fighting with Jordan and with PLO factions along the eastern border. The war ended without a clear result, and the fixed defense line along the canal that it produced would be overrun in the first hours of the Yom Kippur War three years later.
