After the United Nations voted to partition the land into Jewish and Arab states, the Jewish community accepted the plan, while Arab leaders rejected it. When Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, neighboring Arab armies invaded, aiming to prevent the birth of the Jewish state.
For Israel, this war is remembered as the War of Independence: the moment when the Jewish people restored sovereignty in their ancestral homeland after nearly 2,000 years of exile.
