Before dawn on 5 September 1972, eight Black September terrorists broke into the Israeli team's quarters at Connollystraße 31 in the Munich Olympic Village. Wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg and weightlifter Yossef Romano were killed resisting, and nine others were taken hostage while the terrorists demanded the release of more than 200 prisoners. That night a botched West German rescue at Fürstenfeldbruck airfield ended with all nine hostages murdered, along with a German police officer; five terrorists died and three were captured, only to be freed weeks later after the hijacking of a Lufthansa jet.

The eleven were Moshe Weinberg, Yossef Romano, Ze'ev Friedman, David Berger, Yakov Springer, Eliezer Halfin, Yossef Gutfreund, Kehat Shorr, Mark Slavin, Andre Spitzer and Amitzur Shapira. The Games resumed after a one-day pause, and only at Tokyo in 2021 did an Olympic opening ceremony hold a minute of silence for them. Golda Meir's government responded with Operation Wrath of God, a years-long Mossad campaign against those behind the attack.
