Azariah son of Oded appears only in 2 Chronicles 15:1–8. After King Asa defeated Zerah the Cushite at Mareshah (2 Chronicles 14), "the spirit of God came upon" Azariah, and he went out to meet the returning king: "The LORD is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you." He reminded them of the days when Israel was without the true God, without a teaching priest and without Torah, and urged, "Be strong, do not let your hands slacken, for there is reward for your work."

Encouraged, Asa removed idols from Judah, Benjamin and the towns he had taken in Ephraim. In the third month of his fifteenth year, the people gathered in Jerusalem, sacrificed 700 oxen and 7,000 sheep, and swore with shouting, trumpets and shofars to seek the LORD; Asa even deposed his grandmother Maacah for her Asherah image and burned it in the Kidron valley. Curiously, the Hebrew text of verse 8 attributes the prophecy to "Oded the prophet", his father.
