Ahijah the Shilonite met Jeroboam son of Nebat on the road outside Jerusalem. He took the new cloak he was wearing, tore it into twelve pieces and gave Jeroboam ten, announcing that God would tear ten tribes from Solomon's son and leave one for the sake of David and Jerusalem (1 Kings 11:29–39). Years later, when Jeroboam's son Abijah fell ill, the king sent his wife in disguise to Shiloh. The old, blind prophet recognized her at once, foretold that the child would die as she entered the city, and pronounced the destruction of Jeroboam's house for his golden calves (1 Kings 14:1–18). Both prophecies came true, the second when Baasha wiped out the family (1 Kings 15:29).

2 Chronicles 9:29 cites "the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite" as a source for Solomon's reign. The Talmud (Bava Batra 121b) counts him among seven people whose lives together span all of history, from Adam to the end of days, and Hasidic tradition says Ahijah was the heavenly teacher of the Baal Shem Tov.
