At 9:53 on the morning of 18 July 1994 a van packed with explosives was driven into the building of AMIA, the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association at 633 Pasteur Street in Buenos Aires, the center of the community's welfare, records and culture. The blast brought the building down, killing 85 people, Jews and non-Jews, and injuring more than 300. It came two years after the bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires in March 1992, which killed 29. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentina's history and struck Latin America's largest Jewish community.
In 2006 Argentine prosecutors Alberto Nisman and Marcelo Martínez Burgos charged that Iran's leaders ordered the attack and Hezbollah carried it out, and Interpol issued notices for the arrest of senior Iranians. The investigation was marred by cover-ups, and in January 2015 Nisman was found shot dead the day before he was to present his accusation of a cover-up to Congress. In April 2024 Argentina's Federal Court of Cassation ruled that Iran planned the bombing and Hezbollah carried it out. The accused remain at large.
