Open on the interactive timelineIddo the seer is known only from the book of Chronicles, which cites his writings as sources for three reigns: "the visions of Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam son of Nebat" for Solomon's reign (2 Chronicles 9:29), "the words of Shemaiah the prophet and Iddo the seer" for Rehoboam (2 Chronicles 12:15), and "the midrash of the prophet Iddo" for Abijah (2 Chronicles 13:22). That last phrase is one of the first uses in the Bible of the word midrash, which later came to mean rabbinic interpretation of Scripture.
None of these works survives, and no prophecy of his is quoted. Josephus (Antiquities 8.231) names the unnamed "man of God from Judah" who confronted Jeroboam at the altar of Bethel (1 Kings 13) as Jadon, and rabbinic tradition likewise identifies him with Iddo. He is different from Iddo the grandfather of the prophet Zechariah, of the time of the return from Babylon.
