Noah, son of Lamech and the tenth generation from Adam, was "a righteous man, blameless in his generation" who walked with God. Warned of the coming flood, he built an ark and saved his family and every kind of animal. When the waters went down the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat; Noah built an altar, and God made a covenant with him and all living things, with the rainbow as its sign.

After the flood he gave the world the seven laws later called the Noahide laws, according to the sages, and lived another 350 years. His sons Shem, Ham and Japheth are, in Genesis 10, the ancestors of all the nations; Abraham descends from Shem. In the traditional count he was born in 1056 and died in 2006, when Abraham was 58.
