Genesis 24 tells how Abraham's servant, sent to Aram-Naharaim to find a wife for Isaac, asked for a sign at the well of Nahor's city: the girl who offered water to him and to his ten camels. Rebekah (Rivka), daughter of Bethuel and granddaughter of Nahor, did exactly that, and when asked, answered "I will go." Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent and loved her. After twenty years without children she bore the twins Esau and Jacob, having been told that "the elder shall serve the younger" (Genesis 25). When the blind Isaac meant to bless Esau, she dressed Jacob in his brother's clothes to receive the blessing, then sent him to her brother Laban in Haran to escape Esau's anger (Genesis 27). She was buried in the Cave of Machpelah (Genesis 49:31).
Rashi (on Genesis 25:20) says she was three at her marriage, born the year of the Akedah, and Chabad's chronology dates her death to 2205, about when Jacob came home. Her kindness at the well became the Jewish model of chesed, and her choice of Jacob decided who would carry Abraham's covenant.
