Sisera was a Canaanite military commander serving King Jabin of Hazor, according to Judges 4–5. He commanded a powerful army equipped with 900 iron chariots and participated in the oppression of the Israelites for twenty years.

The prophetess Deborah instructed Barak to assemble Israelite forces against Sisera near Mount Tabor. During the ensuing battle near the Kishon River, Sisera's army was defeated, and he fled on foot.

Seeking refuge in the tent of Jael, he was killed while sleeping when she drove a tent peg through his head. His defeat became a celebrated event in Israelite tradition, commemorated in the Song of Deborah.
